Cannabis Use Climbs to New Heights in Young People and Females with a Substance Use Disorder
More Americans were estimated to have used cannabis in 2024 than all other illicit drugs combined. Changes in the prevalence of cannabis use in the U.S. may be related to its evolving legal status/availability and decreases in the perceived risks of use, particularly among younger people. The landscape of cannabis-related products has expanded rapidly and the potency of cannabis (i.e., Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content) has also increased over time. This is concerning because the use of high-potency products is increasingly associated with negative health consequences (e.g., psychosis, cannabis use disorder (CUD) symptoms), particularly among vulnerable populations (e.g., adolescents).
We analyzed more than 1.8 million urine drug test results from patients 12 years of age and older with a substance use disorder (SUD) from across the U.S. to highlight trends in cannabis use from 2019 to mid-2025 with a focus on age and sex differences.
