Dr. Heit is board certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and a diplomat in addiction medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Heit is the recipient of the Marie Nyswander Award given by International Pain and Chemical Dependency Conference to an individual who has helped to further communication between pain and addiction medicine. He was also the recipient of Clinical Pain Educator of the Year Award in 2009 by the American Society of Pain Educators.
Dr. Heit is an assistant clinical professor of medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He has lectured and published extensively on the interface of pain and addiction medicine including co-authoring two chapters in Bonica’s Management of Pain- Fourth Edition.
Dr. Douglas Gourlay is a Medical Consultant, educator, international leader and mentor in pain and chemical dependency. He received his MD from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, completed his Fellowship in Addiction Research Fellowship and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Gourlay, in collaboration with Dr. Heit, are well known for their contribution of “Universal Precautions” approach to pain management, and their “UDT Monograph” which is widely published and utilized in practice and academia.

Maria G. Guevara, Pharm.D., CPE is currently the Director, Clinical Affairs, Education & Training at Millennium Health. Dr. Guevara received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Florida. She then completed a Specialty Pharmacy Residency in Pain and Palliative Care at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, Florida. Dr. Guevara has practiced as a Clinical Specialist in Pain Management as part of a pharmacy-based consult service for inpatient pain management. She has managed various types of acute and chronic pain, including patients with comorbid psychiatric and substance use disorders. Dr. Guevara is passionate about education and previously served as a preceptor for pharmacy students and post-graduate residents. She has served as the residency program director for the Specialty Pharmacy Residency in Pain and Palliative Care at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Dr. Guevara is a certified pain educator (CPE) and has given numerous lectures on various topics to pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners, PAs, physicians, and addiction treatment professionals across the country, including lectures on topics in pain management, pharmacogenetics, synthetic drugs of abuse, and urine drug testing in various settings
