As the nation continues to navigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, new and alarming drug use trends have emerged. At Millennium Health, we believe it’s more important than ever to do our part by informing public health surveillance efforts and bringing awareness to communities that are most in need of intervention. Our most recent Millennium Health Signals Report™ analyzed results from 2 million unique patient urine specimens collected in health care specialties through December 2021.

Section 1: Depicting Illicit Drug Use Trends Through 2021 findings revealed:

Illicit fentanyl and methamphetamine use continued to climb through much of 2021
Between 2019 and 2021:
- Fentanyl positivity increased in all U.S. census divisions, particularly in the West, where positivity increased 427% in the Pacific division
- Methamphetamine positivity increased in all but one census division (Pacific), led by a 134% increase in New England
- Cocaine positivity increased in all U.S. census divisions, led by a 48% increase in the Mid-Atlantic
- Heroin positivity declined in most census divisions
